  1. HERMES V2.1 RELEASE NOTES

  3. To update:
  4. BACKUP ALL FILES BEFORE UPDATING.
  5.  
  6. First, replace your old Options external with the one included here.
  7.  
  8. Thanks to v2.0's improvements, all you have to do then is replace the old app
  9. with the new one, set your Multifinder memory and boot.
  10.  
  11. When booted, go to each node and select your modem driver again in the Node
  12. Prefs.  The modem driver interface has been completely rewritten.  If your
  13. modem driver does not appear, see the support BBS for an update.  Some modem
  14. drivers were added, and some were removed because they could not be re-tested.
  15. It is also much easier to make new modem drivers.  The manual documents
  16. the new interface including easy to use export and import.

  18. IMPORTANT NOTE #1: Registered users must first update their serial number
  19. from the support BBS.

  21. IMPORTANT NOTE #2:The computer types have been updated.  See below item #9 for
  22. how to update your BBS.

  27. 1] The Move and Rename commands in the Downloads Manager now work correctly.
  28.  
  29. 2] A new sysop only command has been added from the main menu, "//EQUIT".
  30. This will engage an emergency quit mechanism that will shutdown the app.
  31. Only a user with full 255 access and Sysop marker can use this.
  32.  
  33. 3] A bug was corrected in time recorded for a logon when a user had not
  34. completed the logon process.  This often resulted in erroneous Usage Records.
  35.  
  36. 4] A bug was fixed which would cause a crash if the BBS list was
  37. greater than 32K.

  39. 5] A feature was added called form letters.  This is a sysop-only feature.
  40. From the mail-read prompt, type "O".  You will then be prompted for a form
  41. letter number to send.  It will then load a file called "FormX" where X is the
  42. number you entered.  You must create this file in your Hermes Files folder to
  43. use this.  The top line of this message should be the title.  You are limited
  44. to 9 form letter types.

  46. 6] An automatic password updating system was added.  In intervals, your users
  47. will be prompted to change their password.  You can also use the ":" command
  48. in the User Editor to force a user to update their password at the next logon.
  49. Any users over 1 year old will be asked to update thier password.  They will
  50. then not be asked again for 1 year.

  52. 7] An internal screen saver has been added.  You may set whether this saver
  53. is active and the number of minutes before dimming in the Options external
  54. under System Prefs.  This screen saver is preferrable to any other screen saver
  55. when running Hermes because it takes exactly 0 processor time.  This will
  56. not only give you a faster BBS, but also provides status information about
  57. who is online at the moment on the screen.  You should remove all other screen
  58. savers from your system when using this.

  60. 8] When downloading a file, Hermes would calculate the estimated file
  61. download time based on old Xmodem approximations.  There is now a special
  62. field for every connection type in the modem drivers which allows these
  63. estimates to be absolutely on the mark.

  65. 9] The computer types have been updated for the new PowerBooks, IIvx, Quadra
  66. 950, and other CPUs.  It is necessary to use the included Computer Type Updater
  67. to update your accounts or your users will be shown with different computers.
  68. This is a little bit kludgy, but safe.  You have to run the application
  69. three times.  Every time you should check the box to also change the second
  70. set of parameters.  The parameters on the first run are to replace 16 with
  71. 21, and 15 with 17.  The next run is 14 with 15, and 13 with 14.
  72. The last run should be 12 with 13, and 11 with 12.

  74. 10] A new command, //CATCHUP has been added to the main menu.  This command
  75. is the opposite of //QSCAN which sets all your message pointers to 0.
  76. The //CATCHUP command marks all messages as read.  This is sometimes useful
  77. when one has been away for a while and it would be impossible to read some
  78. thousands of new messages.

  80. 11] The modem drivers have been completely rewritten.  "New" and "Delete"
  81. buttons in Node Prefs let you create and delete modem drivers from within
  82. Hermes.  No more ResEdit.  The modem drivers are also now more powerful,
  83. allowing perfectly accurate transfer time estimates.  It should be fairly
  84. obvious from looking at the other modem drivers (double click on the name)
  85. how to make a modem driver.  If it seems unclear, see the manual for v2.1.
  86. Also, you can export new modem drivers by pressing the Export button.  To
  87. import modem drivers, just drop the new modem driver file on the Hermes
  88. application icon and it will immediately register without even restarting
  89. the application.  The new modem drivers are not compatible with the old
  90. modem drivers although the process of conversion is trivial as the actual
  91. modem interface is identical.

  93. 12] A bug was fixed with the "Free Downloads" option.  Users will not now
  94. be able to cheat this feature into letting them download when they
  95. have a bad ratio if the C restriction is on.
